Q. What is Pilates?

Traditional Pilates is a system of exercise developed in the 1920s by Joseph Pilates.  He believed that injuries are caused by imbalances in the body’s habitual patterns of movement.  His exercise system emphasises the importance of movement taking place on a central core of stability to correct those imbalances.  He emphasised a number of key principles such as concentration, breathing, control and flowing movement. The exercise are designed to improve core strength, body tone, posture and flexibility.

Q. Who is teaching the classes?

We are physiotherapists with considerable experience in rehabilitation of a wide variety of musculoskeletal conditions. We are members of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapists and Health Professionals Council.  We are also fully qualified Modified Pilates Instructors from the Australian Physiotherapy and Pilates Institute (APPI). This is a Pilates training curriculum designed by physiotherapists for those working in the field of rehabilitation. Traditional Pilates is broken down into clearly defined levels to ensure a standard gradual progression for clients. The APPI curriculum is based on scientific evidence and therefore ensures quality and professional standards in the exercises you will perform.

Q. How is the class structured?

We believe the most effective and enjoyable way of experiencing Pilates is to keep classes small with participants of similar ability.  We therefore run structured 6 week programmes of Pilates classes. We will provide appropriate equipment but you are welcome to bring along your own exercise mat if you have one. Remember that although Pilates is a gentle exercise regime you will need to wear loose comfortable clothing and you should bring your own water.
